God Made Man, Man Made Religion, and Religion Made Man Mad

They told us that God created us in his image and likeness. Ha! Did God even say he is a man? Well, I’m wont to think it’s the other way around; that we made god.

We create gods, actually. No reference to Anton Lavey’s Satanic Bible here.

Let’s start with ancient Rome where homosexuality was a norm. There were gay gods.

  1. Dionysus and Ampelus
  2. Apollo and Hymenaios
  3. (Sighs) Zeus had to take the form of Diana to get sexual with Callisto.

The Israelites of yore were belligerent people. Please, how do you keep fighting with all your neighbours? You might be the problem. The biblical god displayed violent proclivities. I’ll cite one:

1 Samuel 15: 3-4.

Thus says the LORD of hosts, ‘I will punish Amalek for what he did to Israel, how he set himself against him on the way while he was coming up from Egypt. Now go and strike Amalek and utterly destroy all that he has, and do not spare him; but put to death both man and woman, child and infant, ox and sheep, camel and donkey.'”

Yea, right. Terrorism! Hmmm… I bet you didn’t know this part.

My point is this: Our conceptualisation of God is faulty because we, humans, have projected our flaws and faults onto the energy/force/spirit that brought our universe into existence.

In our bid to understand this being, we have created religion in our respective societies. Hence, the diverging perceptions. Sadly, none is the perfect viewpoint.

Of course, there is a creator. But, should we pay obeisance to it? (Gnosticism states that the universe was made by a lesser god.)

God made man and man made religion.  (I’m tempted to quote Herr Ludwig Feuerbach)

The human psyche is inherently perverse. That is why it seems as though God has sadistic propensities that goads religious adherents to engage in blood-curdling acts.

If “God is the Absolute Good”, how do we explain that a good god is the reason for violence all in the name of religion?

How do we explain that most of the problems in the world stem from religion?

Most religions tout hate.

If God is Love and religions peddle hate, it  means God and religion are two separate things!

It’s high time we sieved religion from God.

Religion is a societal construct. Spirituality is an individual’s construct.

Religion is what society teaches you about God. Spirituality is what you discover, on your own, about God.

P.S. Religion is geographical. If you were born in India, you might have been a devoted Hindu.

P.P.S. Your religion should be personal. Like, don’t fucking tell me what religion you fucking practice. Je ne suis pas intéressé. We know you want to go to heaven, don’t make other people miserable.

P.P.P.S Stop judging people. Stop doing God’s work. The incident at Orlando is the impetus for writing this. People need to relax. Jesus never said anything about being gay. He even healed the centurion’s servant in Matthew 8: 5-13. A Roman so concerned about his servant. Really? All that love and affection for a mere servant!
